Playing for keeps: Pianos for public jam sessions

Seven pianos rolled out of a truck and into two downtown Everett art galleries Wednesday afternoon.

The plain 'ol pianos won't stay that way for long. The city has chosen seven local artists to each decorate a piano how they see fit.

"The only condition (for the artists) is that they have to make sure the pianos can still be played," said Kate Reardon, Public Information Director for the city.

Because with all that piano flair - it would be a shame to keep them cooped up.

Beginning on August 4, the pianos will roll out to downtown street corners every morning for three weeks - ready for passersby to sit down and jam.

It's the city's first attempt at an interactive street art project, Reardon said. "We're excited to see what kind of magic comes out of it."

No word on what will happen to the pianos after the project ends.
