Everett Symphony Cancels Season

The Everett Symphony announced Tuesday that it is cancelling the remainder of its 2009/2010 season, following a concert on Friday.

After accruing $500,000 in debt over nine years, the Symphony was forced to make dramatic changes, including selling its rehearsal hall and administrative offices in downtown Everett.

The board now operates on an all-volunteer basis with one paid staff member.

However, the Symphony is planning for a return this fall.

A press release says the orchestra and board "have taken steps to lay a new foundation for a revitalized organization that can continue on as a strong and vibrant sound in our community."

The Symphony is currently exploring the possibility of relocating headquarters to the Everett Mall. Under consideration is the 3-plex theater left vacant when Regal Cinemas moved to its bigger theater inside the Mall.

A one-year feasibility study will be conducted to determine if the space will work as a rehearsal hall and performance venue for smaller performances. Large concerts would likely be performed at the Everett Civic Auditorium.

The Orchestra's musicians are donating their services this Friday - so that the final show can go on:

  • "American Idols" concert
  • January 29th, 8 p.m.
  • Everett Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Ave.
